Jacqueline
Property Officer
Part of ARC for 2½ years

The “product” that ARC delivers makes the ARC a great place to work, and having spent years in the private sector overseas, I really enjoyed the ‘professional, yet fun’ culture. It was during my time as a temp that I got a feel for the way ARC worked, so when a permanent role came up within Democracy Services, I didn’t hesitate to go for it.

My job sees me in the office some days, and out in the field on others. Being in a cadet role, I make sure to spread my time throughout the projects gaining insight to the different elements. Not only is there good diversity within my job, I’ve also been given the chance to push my potential and develop. So, from doing study to make me better at what I do, right through to completing the NIWA Scientific Occupational Diver course, the ARC have been incredibly supportive.

Each department within the ARC is quite unique and offers different services and products, so between each department the culture is rich, the environment is professional and the opportunities are endless!

Scott
Park Manager, Muriwai
Part of ARC for 15 years

I started out with the ARC as a summer student back in 1995 and was working out at Huia. After working there for the summer I was sold on the parks network and organisation. Since then, I’ve progressed in my career to my current role of Park Manager at Muriwai

You couldn’t find a better place to work than in Regional Parks. I get to visit a number of different parks in my role, the settings and environment are just great, and the challenges and unpredictability of the role mean you never know what you will get each day.

We have a really supportive culture amongst staff. We’re all passionate about what we do, and I enjoy the fact that there’s a definite focus on delivering a quality service to our customers.

Having been fortunate enough to advance my career both within the ARC and in parks, I can vouch for the fact that the ARC is really open to the development of staff. Basically, if you’re willing to give it a go you generally get support.

Thomas
Pollution Response Officer
Part of ARC for 2½ years

I have been an outdoor person all my life and have a great passion for the environment. Working as a Pollution Response Officer (PRO) means that I’m dealing with clean-ups from spills and other emergencies that potentially damage the environment – and I get to help at a closer level.

Every day is different. Recently there was a 600L spill of animal blood into the stormwater system, which with the rain ended up been well over 5000L of contaminated water that needed to be removed. In that same day I dealt with oil in a stormwater system, and ducks swimming in a contaminated stream.

The ARC has been very supportive to me in furthering my career, and in return I want to help tell the ARC story, and let people know that we’re here to protect the environment and make Auckland a great place to live.

The ARC is a truly diverse organisation, which I believe helps promote better communication between each other, and helps us to learn different aspects of each other’s culture. The great people I work with, the good friends I’ve made, and the social club events like golf days, ski trips, sporting events and shows make the ARC a great place to work.

When I first started out I found it incredibly exciting, and now… everything is still just as exciting!
